It’s no secret that I use Puppy culture protocols to raise my litters. This training includes desensitizing puppies to various sounds, including the vacuum cleaner. We gradually expose the puppies to the vacuum at a low volume and high distance, pairing it with positive reinforcement like treats and praise. As the puppies become more comfortable, the volume and distance are increased but always while ensuring the puppies remain in positive states. By following the five steps listed below, we help puppies learn to be comfortable around the vacuum, reducing the risk of future fear or anxiety. In the video below, I am already at Step 5 with this litter.
5 Steps to Desensitizing Puppies
1. Initial Exposure:
- Place the vacuum in the room, switched off, and allow the puppies to explore at their own pace. If the puppies are scared, distract them with play and positive reinforcement.
2. Gradual Introduction of Sound:
- Start with the vacuum running at a low volume and distance, associating it with rewards like treats.
3. Increasing Volume and Proximity:
- Gradually increase the volume and move the vacuum closer to the puppies, always monitoring their reaction and adjusting as needed.
4. Positive Reinforcement:
- Always use positive reinforcement like treats, praise, and petting to create a positive association with the vacuum.
5. Consistency and Patience:
- Repeat the desensitization process regularly and be patient, as it may take time for the puppy to become comfortable with the vacuum.
