What Is Epigenetics?
Epigenetics refers to changes in gene expression that don’t alter the DNA sequence itself, but are influenced by environment, experience, nutrition, stress, and behavior. These changes can sometimes be passed from parents/pedigree to offspring.
How Epigenetics Applies to Dog Sports
When selecting a puppy from sport-proven parents, you’re not just getting inherited traits (like drive, stamina, or structure), but potentially also epigenetic effects shaped by the parents’ lifestyle and training history.
Today’s video – HOT DAMN, SHAZAM!
I felt that 8-week old Shazam needed a post unto himself today! We spent some time with the sheep this morning at Y-Knott Ranch. Just before this video took place I was heading back to the truck to get the rest of the pack for a walk. I looked around me for a head count of the puppies I had with me… Tony was right there but Shazam was way across the field. I’m so grateful I turned on the video to capture this amazing exchange where he took on the flock.
When we go out at this age, I ask for nothing other than respect for the sheep. All four Superheroes consistently have that and then some. If you put your sound on you’ll see that there are no commands or directives. I’m there to observe but also read the stock to keep these babies safe. If you have three minutes to watch this… you’ll see what keeping the work in the lines and proving the work in the lines in a breeding program looks like while still maintaining good tempered dogs who are in partnership with their people. This is all natural talent and innate wisdom handed down through both sides of his pedigree.
I am so incredibly proud of Shazam for staying calm, confident and not getting frustrated and ramming the sheep.
