Tony has been raised with Puppy Culture Protocols from Day 1. He is a very stable dog, never mind still being a puppy of only 20 weeks old. We were at a Rally Obedience Trial today with Romeo at Wet Noses and met up with a friend with an older Pomeranian-cross dog who is very nervous around bigger dogs having had some bad experiences. I assured my friend that Tony was a worthy helper in this situation with his calm, stable demeanour. We asked the dogs to hang out within a close proximity that they Pom could handle and then we simply rewarded both dog with praise for being non-reactive. The exercise did not last long as we did not want to exceed the Pom’s threshold. It is diverse and consistent exercises like this that will help both dog and handler get over those bad experiences and learn to have trust again. A caveat, however, is that this exercise MUST be done with a very stable and trustworthy dog under very careful supervision. Had either dog shown discomfort in their body language the exercise would not go forward.
