Soft treats are preferred in training for Conformation, Rally, Obedience, Tricks & Scent Detection because they are quick for the dog to eat without a lot of time wasted chewing and crunching. Most soft commercially available treats have glycerin or other additives to maintain their texture and give shelf life and I found that these often result in various kinds of digestive upset for dogs. A handler can go through a lot of cookies in a very short period of time when training intensely. It was for these reasons that I started making my own treats.

Classes, seminars and clinics are expensive so I also didn’t want to risk my tuition because my dogs got bored of what I brought and lost incentive to work for me. This meant prioritizing high value ingredients that kept their attention. The flavour combinations that I came up with had considerations to allergy, whole ingredients, limited/no carbohydrates and no preservatives. All of these things made them irresistible to dogs and I often found myself to be a bit of a Pied Piper at events where other dogs would quit their owners and come to me instead just because my pockets smelled good. That is when merchandising them became necessary.

FORMAT

1” x 4” (approx) soft fruit leather/jerky texture strips that can be easily cut with scissors or a knife into whatever shape you need for your training. I like itty-bitty squares for puppy manners, skinny long strips for conformation and bigger squares for obedience/scent detection with adult dogs. Because they have dog-friendly aroma, you don’t need very large pieces to retain your dog’s attention.

PACKAGING

Frozen 4 oz resealable ziplock foil bags. Approximately 12-15 pieces depending on variety.

STORAGE

No preservatives means they are perishable, so they need to be stored short term in the fridge or long term in the freezer. They are fine to be distributed from a pouch or pocket while you are training with them however they will go bad if left out indefitely.

SHIPPING

Being perishable means that I cannot ship them. I sell to people who are local to the Calgary & Okotoks area out of my own freezer. I can also send freezer-pack packages with people from my area who are going to dog sport events in Canada. Pick up is available in Okotoks or sometimes we can arrange to meet in south Calgary.
